 INDIANS?
When Christopher Columbus
came to the America, he thought he
was in the East Indies and called
the people “Indians”. But that was wrong.
Some people still call them Indians”,
but it is not the best word. You can call
them Native Americans in the US, or First
Nations in Canada, but the best way is to
use their tribe name.

TRIBES?
Native Americans are not one group. That is like saying all
Europeans are the same. There are many different tribes.
For example, the Mohawk tribe in the Northeast,
Cherokee in the Southeast and Apache
in the mountains.
They have different houses, clothes, languages,
food – everything.
They are like different nations with different cultures.

ARE? OR WERE?
There are still many Native Americans living in North American
today, and many live in small areas called reservations. When the
Europeans came , they weren´t very nice to the Native Americans there.
They made them ill, killed many of them, and took their homes. Now the tribes are very small. Some of them live in the traditional way, but many of them live in the modern American way, with new houses and  clothes.
